The celebrity couples who’ve called it quits
A round-up of high-profile celebrity breakups in recent years
Maintaining a relationship is hard work and takes a lot of effort. However, when you are a celebrity, this becomes instantly harder. Between crazy work schedules, having the eyes of the world on you and rumours constantly spreading, it can be hard to maintain a relationship with that special someone.
No matter how long the relationship lasted, whether it was four days or 25 years, we know it has got to hurt.
Here, we round up the high-profile celebrity breakups and divorces in recent years:
Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner's breakup rumours started on September 1 when Joe filed for divorce, citing an irreparable breakdown of their marriage. By September 6, the two released a joint statement claiming a mutual and amicable decision to end their marriage. However, subsequent information cast doubt on the accuracy of this statement.
On September 19, following an evening spent with Taylor Swift, Sophie filed a lawsuit against Joe on September 21, accusing him of his wrongful retention of their two children. She claimed that the children had been taken from her and that she had discovered the divorce, along with the general public, on September 1.
However, on October 10, the two reached a temporary agreement after a mediation period. This arrangement allowed Sophie to take her two children back to England until October 21, after which custody would shift to Joe until November 2. This rotation would continue until January 7.

After news broke about the couple's split, an inside source informed PEOPLE that the separation was influenced by the distance between the 30-year-old singer and actress, who had been filming the Wicked adaptation in the U.K. for a significant portion of the year. The insider explained, "Living apart didn't help their relationship. For a while, she was content in Los Angeles and hoped to establish a life there with Dalton."
The source also emphasized the challenges stemming from Gomez's demanding career as a luxury real estate agent, which required her to be based in Los Angeles.
Despite the ultimate dissolution of their relationship, insiders shared that Ari had nothing but praise for Dalton. Throughout their marriage, he remained her biggest supporter and fan.
After much speculation from the public, it has been confirmed that Barbie Hsu and her estranged husband Wang Xiaofei are divorced. In a statement confirming their divorce, it was mentioned that “Mr Wang and Madam Hsu met each other because of fate and spent beautiful times together. Even though they choose to part ways now, they are very thankful for what they have given each other,".
The decision appeared to be triggered by Xiaofei’s controversial political comments on his Weibo — he had slammed the Covid-19 situation in Taiwan while praising how China has handled it.
The 45-year-old and her husband, Chinese businessman Wang Xiaofei, have reportedly reached a consensus regarding the custody and visitation rights of their two children, as well as assets including a mansion and a hotel chain, and the court will decide soon on their divorce.

Prior to their split, Zayn Malik released a statement following a TMZ report that Gigi's mother Yolanda Hadid was considering filing a police report against Zayn for striking her, according to unnamed sources. Zayn then told the outlet he "adamantly" denied Yolanda's "false allegations" that he struck her.
He also mentioned in a post on Twitter that he wanted to create "a place where private family matters aren't thrown on the world stage for all to poke and pick apart," adding that the incident "was and still should be a private matter."
According to a recent report by PEOPLE, Gigi is also taking matters into her own hands and has decided that she is not planning to cut off her ex Zayn Malik after their breakup. A source close to Gigi also mentioned that "Yolanda is very upset with Zayn, but Gigi has made it clear that her daughter needs her dad."

Fashion designer Mary-Kate Olsen and her husband, French banker Olivier Sarkozy, have decided to end their 4½-year marriage, reported The Straits Times.
According to People magazine, the 33-year-old designer filed for divorce in New York County Supreme Court on May 25, the day New York City courts reopened after closing amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
She had initially requested an emergency order to file for divorce from Sarkozy on May 13, according to court documents, but the request was denied. New York City matrimonial attorney Bernard Post told People that her case did not qualify as an emergency.
"Domestic violence is an emergency, perhaps refusing to provide health care is an emergency. I want to be divorced because I want to be divorced now is not an emergency," said Post.
Olsen, who operates two fashion brands (The Row and Elizabeth And James) with her twin sister Ashley, tied the knot with 51-year-old Sarkozy in November 2015.
The couple reportedly had many disagreements in their marriage, including whether they wanted children. Sarkozy, who has two grown children from his previous marriage with writer Charlotte Bernard, did not; Olsen did.
Hong Kong star Gillian Chung has parted ways with her Taiwanese husband, aesthetics doctor Michael Lai.
Chung, 39, married Lai, 30 in 2018. They have no children.
Lai confirmed to Taiwanese media last Friday night that the pair had split up. He later uploaded a lengthy post on Instagram, where he admitted to being single again.
Lai, who gained recognition in Taiwan as "Medicine's Sunny Wang" due to his good looks and resemblance to actor Wang, was previously married to a social media influencer before he tied the knot with Chung.
In his post, Lai wrote that Chung regretted marrying him. This was though Chung told the hosts of Taiwan variety show Truth Everything last year that she was the one who popped the question, telling Lai that they should get married.
Lai wrote: "In 2018, at our pre-wedding party in Los Angeles, you suddenly became distant and cold. I asked why and you told me you regret it, that you don't love me very much and that you're not suited for marriage. We talked a lot and decided to still give it a shot.
"In March this year, you called to say: 'I'm sorry. I thought I would slowly fall in love with you after marriage but I could not.'"
He added: "I think I'll still be friends with Gillian. She is the kindest, most innocent, bravest and most beautiful woman I've ever met. She is just no longer in love with me. Thank you for all that you have given me. If I could do it all over again, I will still propose to you and marry you."
Chung's manager Mani Fok told Hong Kong media that the couple have agreed to separate but that divorce proceedings are not yet underway. The couple had reportedly signed a pre-nuptial agreement.
According to Hong Kong reports, Fok said the state of the couple's marriage was intended to be kept a secret as friends of the couple had hoped they might reconcile eventually. She added that Chung's lawyers have sent a reminder to Lai to keep a low profile after his public post on Instagram.
Chung, best known as one half of the Cantopop act Twins with Charlene Choi, has kept quiet about the break-up though a good friend of hers reportedly told Hong Kong media that the couple's problems stemmed from Lai's flirtatious behaviour with other women.

The couple were first spotted dating by Us Weekly in October 2018 when they were seen behaving intimately in New York City. They were later seen stepping out together on several occasions and went on a trip together to France two months later.
While the couple have never officially announced their relationship, they made their red carpet debut together at Italy's Venice Film Festival in September last year to promote The King, which also starred Joel Edgerton, Sean Harris and Robert Pattinson.
They were then seen kissing on a boat in Italy while on a vacation there in the same month. Depp had nice words for her beau whom she described as "incredible" and "so, so great" at his job.
Chalamet rose to prominence after acting in the 2017 movie Call Me By Your Name, which earned him a Best Actor nomination at the Oscars in 2018.

Lo, 40, and Chow, 31, have been dating for nine years with talk of marriage even, but rumours of their break-up have been circulating since early this year, with netizens pointing out their lack of interactions on social media since January.
On Thursday morning (April 23), Chow wrote an explosive post on Weibo, accusing the singer of cheating on her and having improper relationships with several women.
"The break-up began when I looked through your mobile phone," Chow wrote. "You told me more than once that the most important thing for two people who are together is mutual trust, and looking at each other's mobile phone will break this trust."
"I have been listening to you for nine years and have not scrolled through your phone. But this time, for some reason, I scrolled through it, and I am glad I have done so, " she continued.
The influencer, who is nicknamed "Little Angelababy", disclosed in the post that Lo has another mobile phone which he uses to flirt with other women, and that he had invited other women to their home when she was not around.
Chow added that Lo had invited women to his hotel when he visited foreign cities, and accused him of having improper relationships with actresses under his wing.
She said she regretted forgiving him the first time when she caught him cheating on her. She added that she continued to forgive him despite his repeated betrayals as she thought she could change his philandering ways.
Chow said she wanted to be a good ex-girlfriend by keeping silent, but decided to expose him as she suspected the other women have been in the dark about his womanising.
Lo reacted to her post and said he would not explain further, but would reflect on his mistakes.

[…] We are no longer ‘we’, but we are still ourselves,” wrote the 37-year-old actress on her Weibo page. The post garnered more than 200,000 comments and 750,000 likes in a mere three hours:
On Li Chen’s Weibo page, the 40-year-old actor reveals that him and Fan are “back to friends”, and echoes her statement that “We are no longer ‘we’, but we are still ourselves.”

Since then, the couple have faced some hard times, particularly when Fan’s tax evasion scandal came to light in 2018. The X-Men actress, who is one of China’s highest-paid stars, was fined about S$178 million for using “yin-yang contracts” in order to avoid millions of tax dollars.
While Li stuck by her side during this tough time (he posted on Weibo in October 2018: “No matter how difficult it may be, we will get through this together.”), many netizens noticed that he wasn’t his engagement ring in a video interview, fuelling rumours that the couple had broken up.

I ask for your understanding that it is difficult to go into details of my personal life. I will try to recover from the wounds and do my best to repay you through good productions as an actor.”
Meanwhile, the 37-year-old actress revealed via her agency that the reason for the divorce is due to “differences in personality”. “Because the two were unable to overcome their differences, they were forced to come to this decision,” her agency states.

However, in February this year, TMZ reported that Jordyn Woods, Kylie Jenner’s best friend, had reportedly been seen kissing Tristan at a party. Jordyn has since claimed that she had not slept with the NBA player though tweets from Khloe show that she has not been forgiven.
