“How do two people decide they are going to paint murals together?” That’s what I asked Matt Hooker, 36, and Matt Moore, 31, as they painted the final side of the mural at The Company Store in NoDa.
“The Matts” met in 2008 and were friends for three years before realizing they were both artists. It took another three years for them to do their first project together, a live painting of Thomas Edison at The Edison in Plaza Midwood.
Neither Hooker nor Moore is a formally trained artist, but they both were “that kid” in school who everyone asked to draw something or design a tattoo. Today, they appreciate one another’s style and approach to art.
The Company Store — the best new place to hang out in Charlotte

When I first walked in I was blown away at the ambience, chill lounge music (perfect) over the speakers, amazing artwork both inside and out (shout out to Matt Moore and Matt Hooker for the awesome mural lining the entire house), great selection of beer and wine, and the patio. The patio isn’t quite finished but come spring and summer I imagine it will be packed from open to close.

Is beauty necessary?
Necessary..... I’d say inevitable. It’s one of the ends of a spectrum.
It’s the temperature of my work
the texture of my work ethic
and the speed of my sleep schedule
If you could eat a piece of sculpture, whose is it, what’s its name, what is it made of, and where does it reside?
The frogmen in Dusseldorf’s harbor district look like they’d taste like Spree candy. They are most likely fiberglass.

"One of the most painful feelings in the world is when you encounter someone who desperately wants you to see their art. If you're not overcome with waves of panic and dread, you're already plotting out all of the ways you can safely compliment something you're expecting to absolutely suck.
Thankfully, there are also those times that someone approaches you with something that is truly fantastic. Back in the early 2000s, a friend asked me to listen to an idea he came up with while in detox. Cringing, I heard to his plan to create a Metallica cover band fronted by the infamous watermelon-smashing prop comic Gallagher. He would call it "Metallagher." While the story of the bizarre thrash-metal/smash-fruit combo act continues, we came across something recently that is equally absurd on a similar level.
Matt Hooker, a bearded yoga teacher out of Charlotte, North Carolina, submitted a few high-concept paintings he had painstakingly crafted over the course of this past January. Although he didn't provide much of a mission statement behind the artwork ("I'm a failed musician."), we believe the titles of the paintings speak for themselves." ...
