Have you ever noticed flakes falling out of your hair when you scratch your head? This could mean you have scalp buildup, which is caused by the accumulation of hair products, sweat, oil, and dead skin cells on your scalp that eventually flake off.

“Scalp buildup can be attributed to the accumulation of dead skin cells (dandruff) or excessive sebum (natural oil) production,” Selina Ong, co-founder of Coulisse Heir, explains. “This may be due to infrequent hair washing or the use of harsh hair care products. Environmental factors such as pollutants or dust may also contribute to buildup.”

Unfortunately, it could also just be the case of an oily scalp. This will make you prone to scalp buildup. According to Selina, you're also more prone to this condition if you use heavy or greasy hair care products or do not wash their hair frequently or effectively.

Serene Tan, chief director of Chez Vous, agrees that an inadequate cleansing routine causes scalp buildup as neglecting proper scalp cleansing can allow dirt, excess oil and residue from hair products to accumulate over time. This buildup creates a barrier on the scalp, hindering its ability to breathe and function optimally. She recommends cleansing our scalp at least once a day because of the hot and humid weather in Singapore.

Another cause of scalp buildup is the frequent application of styling products such as gels, mousses, and hairsprays. Serene reveals that ingredients in these products can accumulate, resulting in a heavy, greasy feeling and potentially clogging hair follicles.

Our scalp naturally produces oils (sebum) to moisturise and protect the scalp. Unfortunately, excess sebum protection, combined with dead skin cells, can contribute to buildup, she adds.

You could also be contributing to scalp buildup because of improper application of conditioners and hair masks. Serene warns that unless these products are specifically designed to be applied on the scalp, applying them directly to the scalp can exacerbate buildup, leading to irritation and discomfort.

Scalp buildup could also be attributed to external factors. “The scalp undergoes a continual process of renewal, shedding dead skin cells approximately every 28 days. However, disruptions to this cycle, such as underlying health conditions, stress and lifestyle, can impede the shedding process,” explains Serene.

Consequently, dead skin cells accumulate on the scalp, contributing to buildup and potential scalp issues. However, while removing scalp buildup is crucial, it doesn't mean we should start stripping the scalp of its natural oils completely.

“It's equally vital to maintain the scalp's natural balance. Just as we care for our facial skin, our scalp deserves attention and nurturing to ensure optimal health and vitality,” says Serene.
