The Miss Universe Singapore 2011 titleholder, Valerie Lim (@msvalerielim) sees the Miss Universe platform as a means for women to bring attention to issues such as inclusivity, cultural-sensitivity and sustainability. She was appointed as the National Director of Miss Universe Singapore Organization in 2019 and currently oversees all aspects of the competition, including recruitment, training, styling, content marketing and final competition planning.
In her free time, the 36-year-old also volunteers at the Singapore Business and Professional Women's Association (SBPWA), where she grooms young entrepreneurs via various workshops and speaking engagements. Here are four of her tips for building more confidence in the workplace.
Having someone who is not only experienced, but that you have admiration for, to guide you can be empowering. Apart from equipping you with the right knowledge and skills to guide you in your career progression, this mentor should share the same values you do to offer purposeful enrichment.
By acknowledging every triumph, you build up the confidence to overcome hurdles and achieve greater success. Also celebrate your strengths while working on your weaknesses.
The ability to ask for help is a sign of strength and resourcefulness. Push past your fear of asking for help and you will realise that there are many people who are willing to lend a hand.
Feeling confident about yourself includes dressing well and having the right posture. When you sit or stand up straight, you not only look better, but also feel better. Besides, slouching mimics a defensive stance and makes our brain perceive things in the environment as threats.
